Two Mexican nationals were killed and another was injured when they were hit by an 18-wheeler truck after they changed a flat tire on Interstate 35 in Hill County Wednesday morning. Luis Silva, 19, Maria de la Carmen, 67, and Ulises Perales, 43, were legally parked on the northbound shoulder of I-35 at 4:25 a.m. when they were struck by a 2001 Volvo 18-wheeler, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The wreck occurred just south of Hillsboro, Texas.

Silva was standing behind the car and was struck first before the truck plowed into their Dodge Neon, with de la Carmen inside. The truck also hit Perales, who was standing in front of the car, the spokeswoman said. Silva and de la Carmen were killed and Perales suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization, according to the DPS. The DPS spokeswoman said the driver of the 18-wheeler said that he was “driving on the shoulder because he was sleepy.” She did not know if any charges were filed against the driver of the truck.
